Fragrance: Awakens a Myriad Sensations

Woke up this morning to find an announcement that I had won the Certificate of Outstanding Performance for the below poem on the prompt “Fragrance”.

fragrance1

That which wafts through the air,
Carried by the wind, tickles my nostrils,
Rises, ebbs; percolates each cell, each sinew fills,
Awakens my senses, conjures an image, invigorates,
Plays hide and seek in my head, sparks a memory, soothes…

The smell of the earth after the rains,
The salt in the sea breeze, the sweetness of fresh hay,
The whiff of crackling dried leaves and wood in the day,
Amma’s ground spices simmering in earthen pots,
And I’m re-born; freed from twining, tangling knots…

The soft, tingling perfume of white jasmines tied in garlands,
Yellow-orange marigolds, the drifting aroma of powdered sandal,
The redolence of burning incense, camphor and freshly picked basil,
The tender balm of dusk, the freshness of dawn,
And I’m bathed; my soul cleansed, pure, as a carefully tended lawn…

The sweet scent of red and white roses in the garden,
Orchids, lilies and tulips arranged in crystal and ceramic vases,
The pungency of Christian Dior’s, ‘Poison’, in deep violet bases,
Interspersed with a fragrance: subtle, barely there; I can’t place my finger on,
And I’m strong; my spirit dances- I feel her presence, she’s here, she hasn’t gone…

    • 😊Thank you so much for the encouragement . I’ve always loved these fragrances and there are some more which evoke strong memories like the smell of bread baking in the oven…It’s a small beginning Andrea. I need to work much harder and read much more but with so much going on around me, it’s tough. Do let me know how I could improve my writing based on your own experience. Thank you so much again.
